How to Keep Your Skin Hydrated in the Winter Months

Winter’s chill can be a beauty culprit, leaving your skin dry, flaky, and irritated. The colder temperatures, combined with indoor heating, strip your skin of its natural moisture, making it harder to maintain that healthy glow. But don't worry—there are plenty of ways to keep your skin hydrated and nourished during the colder months. Here's how you can protect and pamper your skin to ensure it stays soft and radiant all winter long.

1. Switch to a Hydrating Cleanser

In the winter, your usual foaming or gel cleanser might be too harsh on your skin. These can strip away oils that your skin needs to stay moisturized. Instead, opt for a hydrating or cream-based cleanser that’s gentle and nourishing. "I recommend Lait Dermo-S because it is a milk based cleanser that will not strip your barrier of essential oils our skin requires to stay healthy during the winter months." -Stephanie, Esthetician. "Lait Dermo-S is also fragrance-free and formulated with glycerin and niacinamide to help cleanse and soothe your skin without leaving it feeling tight or dry."

2. Invest in a Humidifier

Indoor heating systems are notorious for drying out the air, which, in turn, can lead to dehydrated skin. A humidifier adds moisture back into the air, helping to maintain hydration levels in your skin. Try placing a humidifier in your bedroom or office to keep your skin from becoming overly dry. This simple change can make a world of difference, especially if you’re waking up with tight, dry skin.

3. Hydrate from the Inside Out

Drinking water is always essential for healthy skin, but it's especially important in the winter months. The dry winter air can quickly sap your skin's moisture, and the colder weather might make you forget to hydrate. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day and consider incorporating hydrating foods into your diet, such as cucumbers, oranges, and soups. You can also increase your intake of healthy fats—like those from avocados, nuts, and fish—which help support your skin’s moisture barrier.

4. Moisturize Regularly (And Layer)

Moisturizing is key to preventing dry skin, but the colder months may require more than just a quick swipe of lotion. The best way to moisturize during winter is by layering different products to lock in hydration. Start with a hydrating serum or oil like our Complexion AM Serum, followed by a thicker cream to seal everything in. Complexion Daily Renewal is a great option. We also recommend Dermo-Rl if you love the feel of a thick cream, or Hyravit for nighttime—it’s not too heavy but very hydrating. For an extra boost of hydration, consider applying a finishing oil like T.E.W.L. or a masque like Cream Masque Vernix overnight to seal in the moisture.

5. Avoid Hot Showers and Baths

While hot showers can be tempting in the winter, they can also be incredibly drying for your skin. Hot water strips away natural oils, leaving skin feeling parched and irritated. Instead, opt for lukewarm water when bathing or showering and keep it brief. After you step out of the shower, gently pat your skin dry with a towel (don’t rub) and immediately apply your moisturizer to lock in moisture while your skin is still slightly damp.

6. Exfoliate, But Don’t Overdo It

Exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells, allowing your moisturizers to absorb more effectively. However, in winter, your skin can be more sensitive, so it’s important to exfoliate gently. We have multiple options, from toners to pads, that can be great choices. We suggest consulting with your provider at your next appointment or booking a virtual consultation to help choose the right one for your skin!

7. Don’t Skip Sunscreen

Even though it’s colder outside, the sun can still damage your skin. UVA rays (the ones responsible for premature aging and skin damage) are present year-round, and they can still affect your skin on cloudy days. Always wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Many sunscreens contain hydrating ingredients as well that can help lock in moisture!
