What age should you start Botox?

The right time for Botox is one of the most common questions we get, and the answer is more personal than a number. It depends on how your muscles move, how your skin is holding up, and what you're hoping to change. Most people start anywhere from their late 20s to their 40s, but where you fall in that range is something a provider can assess by looking at your face, not your birth year.

Botox is a neuromodulator, a treatment that temporarily relaxes the specific muscles that create expression lines. Dysport is another neuromodulator offered at CMPLXN that works similarly, and your provider can help you decide which fits your muscles and goals.

Is there a "right" age to start?

Every face is different, and a provider weighs three things to shape a plan around what you're hoping to achieve: how your muscles move day to day, your skin's elasticity and collagen support, and the specific results you want to see. Research on modifiable skin-aging factors points to habitual facial expression and sun exposure as two of the biggest drivers behind how quickly wrinkles take hold, which matches what providers see case by case.

A provider watching your muscles move can gauge exactly how much they contract at rest versus during full expression, then weigh that against how much collagen support your skin has left. Those specifics only show up in person, and they help a provider decide how many units of Botox to use and exactly where to place them, so the plan fits your face instead of a general age guideline.

What preventative Botox does (and doesn't) do

Preventative or baby Botox starts in your 20s or 30s, using smaller doses before deep lines form, with the goal of gradually softening muscle movement over time. Botox works by blocking the nerve signal that tells a muscle to contract, so less muscle movement over the years can mean fewer creases forming in the skin above it.

So when is it worth considering? At CMPLXN, co-founder Natalie Copeland, FNP-C, watches for a few practical signs: lines that stay visible at rest, makeup starting to crease into those lines through the day, or lines that have simply started to bother you.

"I start conservatively. I'd rather have someone come back in two weeks for a touch-up than over-treat and freeze their expression."

And sometimes the answer is not yet. If your lines only show up with animation and not at rest, you may not need treatment at all, unless you are after a subtle lift, like opening up the eyes or a light brow-lift effect.

How to know if you're ready (provider assessment over age rules)

A provider can tell you if you're ready within a few minutes of looking at your face. Here's what they're checking for:

  • How your muscles move at rest and at full expression

  • Whether lines are dynamic (appear only with movement) or have started to etch in at rest

  • Your skin's texture, elasticity, and sun damage

  • Your goals, whether that's softening a line you already see or getting ahead of one you're starting to notice

At CMPLXN, injectables are performed by aesthetic nurse practitioners. Co-founders Beth Higney, ANP-C, and Natalie Copeland, FNP-C, bring a combined 30 years of clinical experience, along with a team of qualified providers trained to assess your face and tailor your plan.

What to expect at your first appointment

Your first visit starts with a conversation. Your provider will ask about your goals, review your medical history, and examine your facial muscles in motion. From there, they'll walk you through a personalized plan, including where treatment makes sense, roughly how much product it takes to get there, and what results should look like on you specifically.

The treatment itself is quick, typically a matter of minutes, with minimal downtime. Results build in gradually over the days that follow.

FAQ

How many units of Botox do I need?

It depends entirely on the area and your muscle strength. Forehead lines, frown lines (the "11s"), and crow's feet each require different amounts, and stronger muscles generally need more product to achieve a natural result. Your provider will recommend a specific unit count during your assessment.

How long does Botox last?

Most people see results for three to four months before muscle movement gradually returns. Metabolism, muscle strength, and treatment area all affect how long results hold, and many patients find results last a bit longer as they continue treatment over time.

Can you wear makeup after Botox?

Generally, yes, but most providers recommend waiting a few hours and avoiding heavy pressure or rubbing on the treated area for the rest of the day. Your provider will give you specific aftercare guidance based on your treatment.

Where should Botox not be injected?

Botox is placed in specific facial muscles by a trained provider. It should never be self-administered, sourced from an unlicensed provider, or injected near the eyes without proper training, since incorrect placement can affect nearby muscles.

How does Botox work?

Botox temporarily blocks the nerve signal that tells a targeted muscle to contract. With less repeated contraction, the skin above that muscle softens, which is why it works well on dynamic lines caused by expression, like the forehead, frown lines, and crow's feet.

Can you get Botox while pregnant?

Botox is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Safety data in pregnant patients remains limited, and dermatology guidance generally advises against elective cosmetic use during this time. If you're pregnant or trying to conceive, talk with your provider about waiting.

Ready to find out what's right for your skin?

Your skin and your muscles determine whether now is the time for Botox. In an assessment, a provider checks how your muscles move and how your skin is holding up, then helps you figure out whether treatment fits your goals today, in a few years, or not yet.

When you're ready to talk it through, book a consultation with a licensed CMPLXN provider. Bring your questions about your skin, your goals, and your timeline, and leave with a plan built around your unique needs.
